Wild Boars on Caya Costa

by Claire Skinner
(United Kingdom)

We are from the UK and have been visiting Cape Coral for the last 7 years and we LOVE it!

My husband and I are boat lovers and he and my sons all love fishing. My daughter and I prefer to be dropped off to a nice peaceful beach and chill out, sunbathe and go shelling.

One time we had loaded up for the day and my daughter and I were dropped off on Caya Costa with our sun shade, picnic and books and we waved the boys off on their fishing trip. We were having a lovely peaceful time and there were only a couple of other people on the beach.

We decided to have a wander and look for some shells, we found some really pretty ones but I had my eye on a really big shell in the wooded area. As I had just put my hand on it to pick it up I heard a sort of snorting noise!!

My daughter, who was only 10 at the time, shouted at me "PIGS"!!

I turned round and there was this great big boar (like the one off The Lion King) staring at me snorting. I was determined to get my shell so I held my daughters hand, gently picked up the shell and slowly walked backwards towards the water. Unfortunately the Boar followed us still snorting!!! I was slightly worried by this time as there seemed to be no-one around at all and we were stranded.

All of a sudden, I spotted a boat in the distance, it just so happened to be our Knights in Shining Armour (our boys)!! My husband drove the boat as near to the shore as possible and my daughter and I quickly scrambled on board.

The cheeky Boar could then smell the bait on the back of the boat and strode into the water sniffing and grunting. We grabbed the video camera and got some good shots of him before speeding off.

It was quite an adventure and every time I look at my shell (in my bathroom) it reminds of the cheeky Boar!!
